Let employees follow your good example. Your title alone should not be enough. If you require that employees are on time to work and have a good attitude, you must exhibit these traits too. People hate hypocrites. You want to earn the respect of your team members.

Trust your gut instincts. Your instincts are what have helped shape you into a strong leader to begin with. Mistakes will be made, of course. Acknowledge your errors and learn the lessons those experiences can teach. Keep your mistakes in mind so you know what to avoid.

Being a good leader means being clear with what you expect from your employees. They aren’t mind readers, and neither are you. A good team thrives on structure which you can provide. Tell your employees what’s expected of them. Be clear in your goals. Don’t be vague about outcomes.

Your role as a leader should not include treating team members, or employees, like children. You are dealing with adults who have adult lives outside of work, just like yourself. Treating them as peers whom you trust and value, is a great motivational tool that every leader should use.

Good leaders identify and understand their obstacles before encountering them in insurmountable ways. Learn to anticipate a crisis and take steps to avoid it. It is possible to have a positive attitude and still not be in denial about potential pitfalls. Delegate team members to minimize risks using each person’s individual strengths.

Two qualities that employees should be able to expect from their leaders are trust, and confidentiality. A good leader will make it clear that any employee can confide in him, and not risk information being shared with others. It is unacceptable for anyone in a leadership role to break the confidence of anyone.

As a leader in your workforce, it is important that you be available to your team at least part of every day. You can avoid being an “absent boss” by making sure to visit each shift at some point during the week, communicating with employees, and making sure that all is going well.
